Tiny Home Village

The Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Initiative (BHI) funds the Tiny Home Village facility and services, as well as this Tiny Home Village program evaluation conducted by Pivot Evaluation. The current BHI developed out of the Department of Behavioral Health Services (DBHS) by a negotiated agreement with the City of Albuquerque via their joint strategic plan to address behavioral health in a shared geographic jurisdiction. The County Manager’s office administers the BHI directly through strategic funding for several behavioral health service providers in the County, and contracts with external evaluators to conduct process and outcome evaluations regarding service provider metrics, objectives, and goals. This document refers to BHI generically as the staff the County Manager assigns to manage the funding opportunities.

From the County of Bernalillo’s website: “The Tiny Home Village is a community living space and transitional housing program. Individuals live in one of 30 tiny homes. The homes are 120 sq. ft., and each has heating and cooling, a bed, shelving, and a desk. Villagers have access to communal bathrooms, a kitchen, and indoor/outdoor living space. Additionally, there is a community garden and dog park. The Village is designed to encourage community living. All of the houses face the common spaces. Staff encourage organic and organized activities. While living at the Village, Villagers work with a case management team to set and achieve goals. Case Managers help residents identify resources and continue on the path to long-term housing and self-determination.”

SVEDC Incubation Programs (Semilla and Business) offer a nurturing environment to help an idea grow into a thriving business by providing indispensable business support and access to essential amenities that the SVEDC facility provides. Pivot provided evaluation reports for SVEDC’s WK Kellogg Foundation grants. The projects promoted virtual business support services to start-up businesses. Reports showed sectors served and connections to other organizations throughout the community. Pivot also facilitated updating metrics collection content and survey language used for various reporting requirements.

NMCAN

NMCAN serves socioeconomically disadvantaged youth who have been involved in foster care or juvenile justice. NMCAN offers financial literacy, economic development, and community building programs. Pivot collaborated with NMCAN to engage stakeholders for inclusion in extensive qualitative data collection including: NMCAN staff, service populations, and partners. Project findings helped NMCAN better understand and articulate the mechanisms of their success while also highlighting opportunities to explore improvements. The evaluation described the relative importance and relational dependency of housing and other socio-economic issues among NMCAN’s service population. Pivot validated NMCAN’s existing approach and discovered evidence for potential program developments to address critical youth housing service gaps.

New Mexico Thrives is dedicated to the success of nonprofit organizations and the nonprofit sector in New Mexico. New Mexico Thrives advocates at the local, state, and federal levels; and provides the opportunity for collaboration and collective action to advance issues that are most pressing to New Mexico’s communities. Pivot developed a data set combining Federal and State Tax records and U.S. Census data to produce county level graphical descriptions used to inform legislators about nonprofit sector status in their areas.

Bernalillo County

Bernalillo County has developed a special fund to address critical behavioral health challenges including homelessness, substance use recovery, transitional youth challenges, and the intersection of behavioral
health with law enforcement. Pivot provided evaluation services for two peer drop-in centers, two peer case management programs, the Tiny Home Village, and an evaluation of the County’s overall metrics approach.

South Valley Mainstreet is a grassroots economic development organization that focuses on the revitalization of historic Bridge and Isleta Boulevards. They have collaborated with Pivot to rollout scientifically sampled surveys in door-to-door efforts to understand community needs. The results led to pilot home maintenance projects co-developed with Bernalillo County and Habitat for Humanity, promotion of U.S. Census participation, and a project promoting local resources including food security and health options called Our Humanity. Pivot facilitated address mapping, data collection, and a portion of the training for canvassers.

Roanhorse Consulting LLC developed an ambitious plan to connect Native orgs and groups across New Mexico and on the Navajo Nation with resources during lockdown conditions of the pandemic. In short order, they gathered an expert team and produced an online resource where people could both donate and find assistance using keyword searches. Pivot offered background technical support.

Assistance Dogs of the West

Assistance Dogs of the West (ADW) builds successful working partnerships between clients and dogs that empower people and open doors to new opportunities. ADW has developed long-term relationships with courthouse staff to help ease various contentious civil matters, with veterans’ organizations to help welcome troops home, and with middle schools to help teach life skills to variously disabled students. Pivot has facilitated data collection development and processes for reporting to granting organizations.
